Located in the heart of the Southern Carpathians, the Retezat National Park is one of the most beautiful and best preserved natural areas in Romania. Established in 1935, the park is famous for its glacial lakes, its diverse flora and fauna and its imposing peaks.
History and Importance
Retezat National Park was the first national park in Romania, founded on the initiative of Alexandru Borza and Emil Racoviță. It covers an area of about 38,000 hectares and is located in the counties of Hunedoara, Caras-Severin and Gorj. In 1979, it was declared a Biosphere Reserve, thus recognizing its international importance.
